Shout out to you if you’ve seen the OG Shaman King. I picked that title because this song is sort of meditative. It’s one of those songs I wrote mostly to process my own emotions, so the lyrics are eclectic at times.

I have a tendency to pick up steam as my songs progress. I like the breakdown in Shaman King, it’s such a perfect, harmonic fill.

I wrote the chorus as part of a recording arts program I started with my students at this school I worked at. We ended up collaborating on a different beat, but I liked the lightness of the instrumental, so I wanted some nice, floaty vocals on it.

Granny said, “Keep your enemies close,”
I done learned my lesson,
I left my friends on the road
It’s antidote for the venom

Shout out Granny. I was feeling isolated when I wrote this, but I wonder how much of my little exile was self-imposed? It’s weird feeling powerful but achingly separate at the same time. I’ve heard it’s lonely at the top, I’ll let y’all know when I get there.
